Professor Stefan H. Mackiewicz

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Stefan H. Mackiewicz on September 28, 2017. Professor Stefan Mackiewicz was an outstanding Polish rheumatologist. He was a graduate of the Medical University of Poznan. After graduation he worked at the Third Department of Internal Medicine in Poznan. In 1967 he became the Chairman of the Department of Rheumatology and Immunology, and he obtained the post of the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Internal Medicine of the Medical University in Poznan. The title of extraordinary professor was granted to Professor Stefan Mackiewicz in 1970, and in 1972 he became an ordinary professor. Later, until 2008, Professor Stefan Mackiewicz was the head of the Ward of Rheumatology at the Joseph Strus Hospital in Poznan. He was several times a visiting scientist in leading rheumatological centres. He was the President of the Scientific Council at the Institute of Rheumatology in Warsaw, a consulting physician of the Governmental Medical Unit in Warsaw, and the National Specialist in Rheumatology. He authored five handbooks for physicians and medical students, and more than 300 scientific papers. Professor Stefan Mackiewicz was an honorary member of the Polish Society for Rheumatology since 2011.
